In January, the James Beard Foundation released its list of semifinalists for the prestigious annual awards. In the category of Best Chef: South, which is comprised of establishments in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Puerto Rico, three Arkansas chefs received a nod.
1/ Jordan Wright – Wright’s Barbecue

The idea that started in Wright’s backyard and grew to a food truck now has brick-and-mortar locations in Northwest Arkansas and Little Rock. Try the ribs, burnt ends, brisket, or classic pulled pork to see why the acclaimed local pitmaster is now being noticed on the national level.
2/ Matthew Cooper – Conifer

With offerings sourced from local farmers, Cooper yields a completely gluten-free menu that is updated seasonally, giving you the opportunity to enjoy his fresh creations at their peak. His Bentonville restaurant, Conifer, echoes its customized menu with an intimate dining space in the heart of the community. This is his second year to be named a semifinalist.
3/ Rafael Rios – Yeyo’s El Alma de Mexico

Using ingredients from his family’s farm and other local growers, Rios has continued to expand his vision from his original food truck to two restaurants in Northwest Arkansas—El Alma de Mexico and Yeyo’s Mezcaleria y Taqueria. Fresh street tacos, burrito bowls, and an amazing selection of dips are just a few of the dishes that keep diners coming back for more. This is his fifth nomination to the semifinalist list, with previous mentions coming in 2020, 2022, 2023, and 2024.
Winners will be announced in June at the official awards ceremony in Chicago. Congrats to these local honoraries who are bringing attention to The Natural State’s food scene.
